Review of Holiday at Fern Tor Veggie Guest House

Written by Laura and Paul    Tuesday, 21 March 2006

This review of Fern Tor guesthouse is based upon a recent weekend break we had there and we hope it will help anyone considering a holiday in Devon.

We arrived at Fern Tor on the Friday night and were greeted by Jane who runs the guesthouse, she offered us tea, coffee and showed us around. The guesthouse stands alone in its own grounds surrounded by beautiful open countryside and wooded areas. The guesthouse land itself comprises of 12 acres and is the home of many rescued animals which are now cared for at Fern Tor, as well as providing an area where organic fruit and vegetables are grown.

We had a room on the first floor which had its own living room and en suite bathroom (as do all the rooms) which was airy and light, immaculately clean and beautifully decorated. Downstairs there was a communal lounge, which contained a variety of books and games as well as maps, books, leaflets and information on the surrounding areas and beyond. It certainly gave us lots of ideas! In the evening we also met Cliff the co-owner of Fern Tor, who was extremely friendly and helpful and gave us directions for our trip out the next day.

When booking, we had opted for the additional meal in the evening and had chosen two courses. On the first evening we had a delicious starter of mint and pea soup with warm homemade bread, and for the main course we were presented with more than ample servings of roasted mixed vegetables and tofu served with mashed potato, broccoli, side salad with dressing and mushroom and onion gravy. The second evening we had a main course of asparagus and ‘cheese’ filled pancakes served with mange tout, green beans and boiled potatoes, along with a side salad with dressing, all of which was extremely tasty! For dessert we were presented with a summer fruits brulee which was divine, topped with vegan ice cream. The breakfasts, which were included in the price, were also delicious, there was a full selection to suit anyone’s tastes, from cereals, fruit and porridge through to vegan pancakes with maple syrup and full veggie/vegan fry-ups! The rescued hens who live free at Fern Tor provided eggs for those who eat them and for those that don’t, there was scrambled tofu! Overall, I would give the food at Fern Tor a definite 10 out of 10!!!!

There isn’t a bad thing to say about Fern Tor. The rooms are beautiful, the food is delicious, the prices are very reasonable, the owners are extremely friendly and the surrounding areas are interesting and varied. I would definitely recommend it to any vegetarians, vegans or indeed anyone who wants a holiday in Devon.
