MANY THANKS to Gill Plumridge and Allan Green for their review in "Roving Reports" from the Summer 2006 issue of the Vegetarian

We’d like to let those who haven’t yet discovered it know about Fern Tor guest house in north Devon. We have been many times for a truly relaxing break with fantastic food in very comfortable surroundings. It’s a purely veggie/vegan establishment with cordon vert meals of generous proportions. Breakfast options include homemade bread and granola and a full cooked breakfast with (when available) eggs from Henrietta and the other Fern Tor hens. Evening meals are optional and vary from more traditional to modern offerings. The FernBocker Glory is particularly famous but all the puds are special and something we particularly value with reliable veggie puddings being hard to find when eating out. The bedrooms are bright, light and spotless and there are always fresh flowers. There is a communal lounge with lots of games and magazines and local books and maps.

The owners are real animal lovers, and as well as running the guest house care for rescued animals including sheep, goats, hens, two gorgeous friendly greyhounds and a pot bellied pig. They also look after wild animals and one of the greatest pleasures is watching all the birds on the feeder right by the window at breakfast time. Dogs and children are welcome and they have a field where you can exercise dogs.

Fern Tor is about ten minutes drive from South Molton and handy for Exmoor as well as many north Devon beaches. Bude and Clovelly are within an easy hour’s drive and Dartmoor and even the south coast are also reasonable days out. However there is no need to travel far, some of the most beautiful beaches (like Saunton and Woolacombe) are just the other side of Barnstaple and there are lots of handy country walks. We have been regular visitors since Fern Tor opened about eight years ago and we are still finding new things to do in the area.
